Walking through our cities or places we can discover spontaneous but very detailed pieces of art. How do they get there? – A lot of people ask themselves, for sure nobody has hired the artists to do so. But anyway, what gives these artists the impetus to use public space as their exhibition area?
There are definitely innumerable answers to these questions possible and the motivation to do so is varied – these artists deal with political, socio-critical, poetical and philosophical topics, rebellion and mere visual aesthetic messages are also being transported.

Analysing these pieces of art one can also point out a dismissal of a regional focus. The methods used are universal and adapted globally. Nevertheless, the pioneers of this art cannot be lumped together. As regards content and aesthetics they follow their own paths. As pointed out, it makes little sense to seek for common ground, the artists are simply too different. This is exactly what seems to bother us, as we love to put things in terms.

However in order to calm us down, they all use a central feature – all artists use public space as their exhibition area – of course unasked.

beyond STREET ART wants to document these forms of art and explain the background. Thus, we have invited nine artists from four countries to Düsseldorf. We will exhibit their art in different galleries in the district of Flingern over a period of  one week .
